English Language Learners

Are the assessments available in languages other than English?

The VTCAP assessments in math and science are available in English and are translated into five other languages. Note that the English language arts (ELA) assessments are only available in English.

During SY23, the math and science assessments were available in Nepali, MaayMaay, Somali, Spanish (Castilian), and Swahili based on the five most commonly identified languages in the Home Language Survey. However, no assessments were administered in Nepali, MaayMaay, and Somali during the SY23 test administration; as such, the assessments will not be available in those three languages for the SY24 administration.

For the SY24 test administration, the math and science tests will be available in Arabic (Standard MENA), Chinese (simplified Mandarin) French, Spanish, and Swahili. Arabic, Chinese, and French are the next most commonly identified languages in the Home Language Survey. Note that the Spanish assessment is translated into a South American form of Spanish for SY24.

The translated versions of the math and science assessments are not available on the computer-adaptive version of the assessments. The translated versions of the math and science assessments are available as a computer-based fixed form.

What accessibility features are available for English learners?

The VTCAP assessments include a full array of universal tools, designated supports, and accommodations.

Universal tools that may be of particular use to English learners include an embedded glossary (all subjects) and the use of an English dictionary or thesaurus (math and science only).

Designed supports include translated forms (math and science only), text-to-speech (math and science only) and bilingual word-to-word dictionaries (math, science, and writing only).

More information on the VTCAP accessibility features is available here.

Reminder: First-year English language arts (ELA) exemption

Federal law exempts English Learners who enrolled in a U.S. school for the first time within the last 12 months (before the beginning of the test window) from the ELA assessments. This exemption does not apply to the math and science assessments.

More information on participation in VTCAP assessments can be found here.
